Kingston, Jamaica: Island Car Rentals took two top prizes at the Ministry of Tourism's inaugural Tourism Service Excellence Awards held recently in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Managing Director, Michael Campbell walked away with the trophies for Kingston Resort Area Champion and the top prize as overall National Tourism Service Excellence Champion in the organization category, underscoring the company's reputation as the best of the best in Jamaica's tourism industry.

The awards, the first of its kind, recognized both individuals and organizations for work during 2008. The programme was officially launched last year under the auspices of Jamaica's Ministry of Tourism and its agencies including the Tourism Product Development Company, the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Tourism Enhancement Fund.

In expressing his appreciation on being selected for such an auspicious honour, Mr. Campbell complimented the other finalists and noted that the success of the company, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, was due to 'our Island people',the corps of persons who work in all areas of the company's operations and who give full meaning to both the company's motto 'Island People Take Better Care of You' as the service philosophy which dominates the daily work ethic which is to provide “world class service first time, every time.

Mr. Campbell noted that Island had consistently promoted itself in the travel industry as the number one car rental company in Jamaica and he was happy to receive the recognition as the company's leadership claim was now emphatically endorsed. In an address to his staff, he said that the Award, which was being contested for the first time, will become highly coveted among the players in the tourism industry in Jamaica and Island must continue to maintain the acclaimed standards of performance. However, he was confident that the staff would be equal to the task and would continue to perform excellently in the future.

In congratulating his staff, he said that "achievement is particularly satisfying for us because it was based on a rigorous set of criteria which included verification of service practices by 'mystery shoppers'. “I believe that this independent certification provides all our clients with the assurance that our promises are credible and our claims can be backed by the actual service experience, Mr. Campbell said.

Honourable Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica's Minister of Tourism, speaking at the Awards function, said the Awards were created to reward individuals and organizations providing the highest quality customer service, and in the process, foster a better understanding of the importance of customer care and service to the success of the Jamaican tourist industry.

"While Jamaica has a reputation of being a pacesetter and a winning destination, we cannot rest on our laurels, and we must be rigorous about maintaining high standards. Tourism is everyone's business and the same should be of service excellence," he said. The awards function was attended by a wide cross-section of industry players who witnessed the history making event.
